Chlorine and Byproducts

Many public water systems add chlorine to the water to kill or inactivate harmful microorganisms which can cause a myriad of diseases ranging from giardiasis to hepatitis, typhoid, and even cholera. Chlorinating the water also fights against potential contamination that could enter through leaks and breaks in pipes. This is a good thing.

Chlorine, however, can have a less than positive effect on things in your home.  Chlorine can break down material (your clothing). It can produce a strong “swimming pool” smell.  Furthermore, chlorine can react with other microscopic organic matter or pesticides and pharmaceuticals. This reaction produces disinfection byproducts (DBPs) which can cause health problems if the DBPs are absorbed through the skin or inhaled.*

Things to look for to determine if the chlorine in the water should be addressed:

  • Skin may feel dry and itchy
  • Hair may feel  dry
  • Clothes may be fading or wearing out faster than they should be
  • Foods that are rinsed and/or cooked in water may have an “off” taste
  • Plants may not thrive
  • Gaskets  and seals made from rubber may wear out

This can be remedied. McNeill Plumbing can help you by installing one of the EasyWater products. Our team is highly trained and can assess your specific needs to suggest the EasyWater products that are best suited for your home. Regarding the chlorine and byproducts issue we will suggest either the Toxin Shield+ or ToxinShield Cartridge. These are designed to filter out contaminants that may result from DPBs so that you won’t become exposed to them.

EasyWater offers the most reliable water treatment products available. This system improves the water quality for countless households and can do the same for yours.
